BMW Key Fob Programming

We cover five BMW models, the M3, M5, X3, X5 and Z3, from 1995 to 2005. None of them can be programmed at home, so a new key or remote needs a locksmith or dealer. What changes is the battery. Most take a CR2025, a few take a CR2032 or CR2016, and five model years use a key with no battery at all. The model pages list the FCC ID and part number for each year.

Choose your BMW model for programming steps, the battery it uses, and the correct replacement fob with FCC ID and part number — 28 model years across 5 models.

A brass dot marks models with verified replacement-fob data (FCC ID + part number).

Can you program a BMW key fob yourself?

Not at home. None of the 28 model years we cover has an owner programming procedure, so every BMW fob and key has to be programmed by a locksmith or dealer with a diagnostic tool. The model pages still list the exact replacement fob and battery for each year.

What battery does a BMW key fob take?

Mostly the CR2025, which covers 14 of 28 model years. BMW also uses the CR2032 and CR2016, so check your model and year before you buy. A plain chip key has no battery at all.
