Lexus Key Fob Programming

None of the 23 Lexus model years we cover can be programmed at home, even though many Toyota remotes can. That covers the GX, LS, RX and SC models we list, from 2001 to 2010, so a new key or remote needs a locksmith or dealer. The battery is where Lexus differs. Most take a CR2016, and eight model years use a key with no battery at all. The model pages list the FCC ID and part number for each year.

Choose your Lexus model for programming steps, the battery it uses, and the correct replacement fob with FCC ID and part number — 23 model years across 4 models.

A brass dot marks models with verified replacement-fob data (FCC ID + part number).

Can you program a Lexus key fob yourself?

Not at home. None of the 23 model years we cover has an owner programming procedure, so every Lexus fob and key has to be programmed by a locksmith or dealer with a diagnostic tool. The model pages still list the exact replacement fob and battery for each year.

What battery does a Lexus key fob take?

Mostly the CR2016, which covers 13 of 23 model years. Lexus also uses the CR2025, so check your model and year before you buy. A plain chip key has no battery at all.

Lexus key types

The replacement keys we've matched to Lexus models fall into 3 types. A model year can take more than one, which is why the model pages list each option with its FCC ID.

Remote Head Key 2001–2010
One piece: a cut metal blade with the lock/unlock buttons built into the head.
Transponder Key 2001–2010
A cut metal key with a chip in the head. No buttons.
Proximity Key 2003–2010
Stays in your pocket — the car unlocks and starts without inserting a key.
